The "S" Word

  Photo by Michal Matlon Stress...even just reading or hearing the word can heighten whatever stress you're feeling in the moment. My apologies for even typing the word but it is something that needs to be talked about. Stress is something that you can feel so instantly at any given point, especially when you are a college student.  According to bestcolleges.com , "stress is a physical reaction to a person's emotions." The symptoms of stress include: "Physical Symptoms: sweating, increased heart rate or blood pressure, vertigo, shortness of breath, muscle tension, headaches, stomachaches, fatigue  Emotional Symptoms: Hostility, irritability, and other mood changes; increased worrying, feelings of helplessness, loneliness Behavioral Symptoms: binge or reduced eating, drug or alcohol misuse, decreased sex drive, erratic sleep habits Cognitive Symptoms: memory loss, loss of concentration, negative outlook, dissociation (i.e. disconnection from your thoughts, feeling...

It causes people to feel drained both physically and mentally and can make people feel hopeless, lost and empty. Depression can affect any one and it has no mercy.  Having depression in college can especially make life difficult. Not only do you have to worry about homework, exams, time management and everything else going on in your life, but then you also have to worry about even feeling up to trying to keep up with any of that.  It is estimated that about 33% of college students suffer from depression. Welcome to the Inside of a College Student's Mind

  For some people, college is a time of freedom and fun...going to parties, making lots of friends, living in a college dorm, being away from one's parents, etc. Then there are people who are the opposite of this. The people who stay home on the weekends, work multiple jobs to pay for school and their homes, pets, children, etc. Most people start the beginning of their adulthood in one of these two ways. Inside the Mind of a College Student is the ugly truth of being one of the students that struggles in the beginning of their adulthood. It's a safe haven and a place for people to relate and feel like they are not alone. Here we will talk about struggling with anxiety and depression, trying to find a balance in life, and ways to help decompress and get some peace. As one of these college students, I have definitely had my fair share of personal struggles. My freshman year of college was full of stress and anxiety and not being able to find the time for myself to keep my sanity....
